Why this is secure
The key stays in the link
Your browser encrypts the message with AES-256 before it reaches our server. It puts the key after the # in the link. Browsers never send that part to a server, so all we hold is unreadable text.
Deleted after reading
By default the message can be opened exactly once. We delete it with the last allowed view, and unopened messages when they expire at the latest. Anyone who finds the link afterwards only learns that it is gone.
Our anonymous visitor statistics only count how often this page is opened. We never learn what you type or which links you create.
Common questions
Can clesk read my message?
No. Our server only holds the encrypted text. The key sits in the link after the # and no browser sends it along. Even with full access to the server, the message could not be read without the link.
What happens if nobody opens the link?
It expires after the time you chose, seven days by default. We then delete the encrypted message.
Why should I not open the link myself?
Every opening counts as a view. With a link that works once, the message would be deleted and the recipient would only see that it is gone.
What if a mail program checks the link in advance?
The message only appears after a click on “Show message”. Link previews and virus scanners in mail programs usually do not click.
If the message is already gone when the recipient wants to open it, someone else has opened it. Send a new link in that case and change the password.
Are there limits?
A message can be up to 10,000 characters long; files cannot be attached. From one connection you can create up to 10 messages per hour and 40 per day. A link is valid for 30 days at most and can be opened 20 times at most.
